5th Research work from Lithuania

“We can save our seas,” says our Erasmus+ club students, following a 5th laboratory experiment. Throughout the week, the students fled to the laboratory to produce bioplastics, a least harmful product of all plastics.  Why less harmful? They are plastics derived from renewable biomass sources (e.g. plant material). They often biodegrade more quickly. Moreover, they do not leach out toxic chemicals.

Our students enjoyed the experiment and now they are looking forward to doing other scientific experiments in Romania.


5th Research work from Spain


This is our fifth experience and we have learned a lot from it. This time we have investigated how to generate a bioplastic that can be dissolved in water. This way it would be a possible solution to the serious problem that exists in our seas. We know seas are becoming garbage dumps for all the plastic and waste of the Planet we generate. Should we don’t want to have entire islands of plastic and beaches covered in garbage, it’s now time to become aware and look for solutions to this from Science.

At the same time, our fish are in danger, and therefore, the whole food chain where we are as well. We have generated a bioplastic material in the laboratory. We have modified certain variables to study how it can become into a flexible material and be dissolved at the same time without generating pollution to the sea.

4th Research work from Romania

Our Erasmus Club did the fourth experiment under the guidance of our new team member, Silvia Oprea, the Chemistry teacher. The students have already experience in our project experiments, so the things goes easily this time. We should mention the involvement of Alexandru Anca and Ionut Curca, who have searched for the materials to brouhgt and have prepare everything for the experiment. Also, during the experiment, they helped their colleagues to finish their work.

The students succeeded not only to understood the procedure (how to do the experiments, the correct succession of the steps etc.), but also the scientific content of it.

We may mention that they liked to do the experiment and the fact that it contributed very much to the formal learning of the students, as our Erasmus Club includes only students form the Environment Protection class, specialised in Chemistry.


4th Research work from Lithuania

On Friday afternoon, when most students were relaxed going home after school, our Erasmus + project students and teachers A.Šukevičienė, I. Urbonavicienė and the Erasmus+ club leader A.Palskienė were working at the school laboratory on Experiment No 4 “Biotechnology can save your life.” The students and teachers found the experiment very interesting and informative.


Today, we are accustomed to using regular dairy products. Not only in childhood, but also as  adults, we use them. We also hear about lactose intolerance in these days more often than ever before. Consequently, the students conducted a study that helps to answer the question why lactose is difficult to tolerate to many people. The following symptoms reveal you might have lactose intolerance: gas in  your tummy, a headache, diarrhea, or maybe your face has acne or you have memory problems. If you notice these symptoms after taking dairy products, it is very likely that your body does not digest lactose . Lactose-tolerant people have a gene that determines that their body produces enough enzyme lactase to break down milk sugar. Lactose intolerance (hypolactase) occurs when intestines, due to various reasons, fail to break down this carbohydrate present in mammalian milk and its products, leading to various symptoms. However, you may reduce the use of dairy products or buy enzymes to improve your health.


4th Research work from Spain


“Today, we have been conducting the experiment whose results will help us to understand the problem about Lactose intolerance. The University of Seville, our partner in this project, has recently designed this experience so that we can develop it easily in our classrooms. Now, we better understand the mechanism of rupture of the lactose in our organism in products derived from milk. So, we have understood that the flow rate over the bioreactor and the temperature are variables that influence the amount of sugar obtained when the lactose is broken thanks to the enzyme”. Now, our students will have two next objective: to investigate on the questions that have been raised in this practice and to teach the experience to younger students.”

My experience

My experience in the ERASMUS SWIS project has been amazing. At first it was a bit difficult for me to get used to it, because I was not very good at it. But then the teacher Rosa started doing scientific experiments, and she was gradually convincing us that this project would be very good for us, we would meet a lot of people, we would travel to many places, etc.

Then we attended the science fair where we presented a stand about the physical-chemical and biological water analysis. I liked it a lot and I had the opportunity to see other stands.


Some weeks later the students from the other countries including Poland, Lithuania and Romania came to our centre. We, the Spanish students, had to show our high school to them. I loved to have contact and communicating with them. We were taken on a visit to the Doñana National Park located in Huelva. Then we went to have lunch at a bar near El Rocío, and later we had a good time on the beach. The next day each one of us was given a diploma as participants of the SWIS in the House of the Siren, located in the Alameda neighborhood of Seville.  When we finished, we had a trip to Cadiz to make a visit to the city and we spent the last day at the beach of La Caleta in Cádiz all together, where we had a great time; we were all together both the foreign students and us. We laughed a lot because my teacher Carlos Becerra had to run after a dove that took a pack of doritos from him. 🙂

On the bus we were very comfortable, we mixed cultures singing and chatting away. Anyway, this has been an unforgettable experience to me.

Our holidays in Spain-Seville

So first of all we want to thank our school and Erasmus SWIS+ club for choosing us. We are so happy we had a great opportunity to meet our project partners and explore Seville.

 When we came to Spain, the Spanish team welcomed us very nicely. On the first day all the teams got to meet each other and had a great time together. We danced, played football, basketball, which was so much fun. Also, we all visited Alcazar. The royal palace impressed us.

On the second day after breakfast we went canoeing, after that we visited LMS (labaratory) Sciences workshop where we did many exciting and serious experiments and we had lunch at “Burger King” as a reward for our hard work. The food was delicious! That evening at the hostel “Lemon Garden” we had dinner and some free time.

On the third day our team had a lot of free time after we had visited the Faculty of Chemistry. All the teams walked and rested in the Maria Luisa Park.


On Thursday we woke up very early and we had a trip by bus to Huelva. This is a Natural reserve. There were a lot of birds and spiders and other interesting and exotic animals and insects. Then all of us went to the beach (Mazagon). Some people from our team and Polish team went to the hostel pool. We had fun there.

On the last day we had a closing ceremony where we got certificates of participation.  After this ceremony we visited Cadiz and the beach. Then we arrived at the hostel and talked about all the week’s activities. However, the saddest thing was saying goodbyes to our friends from Poland and leaving our new friends for a while. Thus that was the greatest adventure of the year.

Here we show, once again, as our students investigate water its quality and certain important parameters to analyze whether clean drinking water is real or unreal theoretically and in practice.

Our school carried out the third research work proposed by our LMS partner. Students from the third level to the last were able to complete the experience. With this work we conclude the analysis of water quality and we learned that although water can apparently be drunk, it contains bacteria that can harm our health. We also learned the protocol for the analysis of coliform bacteria, which are present in large quantities in contaminated water.


3rd experiment in Utena Saulė Gymnasium, Lithuania.


Water is the most essential source of life.  However, water quality determinates its use. Nowadays, freshwater ecosystems are under threat due to a great variety of stressors.

Our students came to a laboratory with several objectives. Firstly, they tried to check tap water quality according to UE legislation. Secondly, they found out if other local water sources (rivers, lakes, wells) were polluted and what  the most probable causes were. They used the following methods to do an experiment: organoleptic and physical chemical analysis as well as microbiological analysis. The students let microorganisms grow in an undisturbed warm location, not in sunlight (UV rays are harmful) at room temperature to later  find out the results. Also, it was interesting to examine the tube and record reactions after 1 day for gas and turbidity and to re-incubate gas-negative tubes (without gas) for an additional day. Then examination and recording of reactions again after 2 days took place.

The students had to answer  several questions, which made them think and look for information on the Internet sources. Local and global issues were discussed during the 3rd experiment. We hope our students benefited greatly from doing this experiment.

“Here our students have carried out, the second scientific experience designed by our partner, the Municipal Laboratory of Seville. Thanks to their work and the our Partners from Bucharest work, we have learned that not all waters are the same, that these ones depending on their origin. The waters we drink have certain physical-chemical and organoleptic characteristics differents from each other. We have also learned that the waters that are marketed in our countries must comply with the European law that regulates their consumption and commercialization. Finally, we are very happy with the work we are carrying out because we improve our manipulative skills in our laboratory as well as assimilate and better the steps of the cientific method necessary to develop a scientific investigation.”


Our younger students have also carried out outreach activities at our school to other students from other schools that visited our laboratory. In this way we take to other students what we develop with this project. They were delighted and we are sure that they will want to study at our school next year.

Conclusions about experiment: Bottled water analysis

A recent article, shows that the State University of New York held a study on bottled water in 9 countries, about the influence of materials which are made of plastic bottles on water quality. In the study, it was concluded worrisome that almost all samples analyzed contain plastic particles larger than the thickness of the hair.
From this article, students were delighted that, on a smaller scale, they were performing a study on bottled water quality in their country. In a way, they realized that their study it’s important, and it is not just a school project. The experiment showed no difficulty making the students understand how to work and worked with pleasure. The students were involved in finding solutions, and decided to consider the kinds of water they consume, being curious and concerned to learn about the water they consume constantly.
They learned to read information on labels, understand the meaning of the data, and thus can choose their water consumption, depending on needs. They were delighted to find out why water has different tastes, and the influence of pH on the body. Also, they learn about importance of nitrates and nitrites and dangers they pose.
Participation in this project has facilitated the acquisition of important knowledge about the water conditions and the importance of its quality (told me that besides the name of the water, did not read neither they nor their parents information on the label, because they do not understand the meaning and importance).
In conclusion, students have learned that:

  • Always, when purchasing any product (not just water) should read the label to inform on product quality.
  • If you have doubts about the quality of water, there are specialized laboratories for analysis.
  • There is European legislation on quality standards that bottled water must meet.
  • If they become specialists in this field, they can find job anywhere as water analysis is done anywhere in the world.
  • That water is beneficial for health but equally hazardous to health.

Nowadays people are worried about the fact that some pseudo-scientific articles have caused confusion about drinking water. The mission of the students participating in the Erasmus + SWIS project in the laboratory for the second experiment is to plan an information campaign for consumers so that they can decide for themselves which water is appropriate or inappropriate for consumption.
Is bottled water better than tap water for everyone? Is all bottled water the same? Does the reusable bottle contain microbiological contamination? How can I choose the best water for myself and my family? Responses were searched by students by performing organoleptic and physico-chemical analysis. It was fun to compare 6 different water samples, which are traded in Lithuania. Project participants made recommendations on what they think the best water for them and their family members is.
In March, pupils are carrying out a microbiological analysis of a reusable water bottle that lasts a week and are using a variety of previously unused materials for research. Curious and motivated participants of the project while awaiting research responses are participating in cultural activities and improving English language skills by completing a glossary of scientific terms that will be made in all the languages ​​of the participating countries.

1513353480966How to identify which sea is measuring the density of the different unknown concentrations? This has been the first experimental work we have done this month. It has been a scientific experience with students of Secondary and Secondary Education in which we have analyzed the dependence of density with the concentration of salt in water. First we developed the experience with our Erasmus Club and then with other students in our school; In total, about 30 students between 12 and 18 years old enjoyed the first scientific experience. To do this, following the recommendations of the Municipal Laboratory of Seville, our partner in the SWIS project, we prepare different saline solutions with our students, then we measure the density of each concentration and perform the graph that represents the dependence of both magnitudes. we discovered that the different salt concentrations cause the density of these to be different and we determine which seas were in agreement with the values of these densities.

The first experiment took place in December, 2017. The pupils were interested and curious. They followed the instructions carefully and reached their goal! It was fun!

The students haven’t used already gained knowledge because they will be taught in the second semester. The tasks were easy to comprehend and to do. More difficulties were noticed in the mathematical calculation and the production of the graph.

They showed their lack of experience in working in the lab (the formal curricula introduces more experiments in the second semester), when measuring, and observing the phenomenon and in the interpretation of the results.

Fortunately, they have showed a lot of enthusiasm and, with the help of the teachers, they succeeded to finish the tasks.

The idea of conducting a common experiment with colleagues form other 4 European schools, made them very excited to travel to Seville in May.
